Santander pilots in-branch card recycling machines

Santander is piloting a recycling scheme in choose UK branches permitting the general public to dump expired or unused plastic playing cards in a secure and inexperienced method.

The six-month pilot includes specialised self-service machines for folks to shred their undesirable playing cards into over 100 items. The playing cards are recycled into plastic pellets able to be re-used.

Santander notes that credit score and debit playing cards are sometimes comprised of a number of layers of laminated plastic, steel oxide particles, solvents, inks and a magnetic strip, which makes them significantly advanced to recycle.

Fermín Martínez de Hurtado Yela, head, sustainability and accountable banking, Santander UK, says: “Financial institution playing cards are historically very troublesome to recycle. With 92 million debit playing cards and 60 million bank cards at the moment in UK circulation, it’s a important problem and one which we need to play our half in serving to.”

Final 12 months, Banco Santander introduced that by 2025, all debit and bank cards within the UK, Spain, Portugal and Poland might be created from sustainable supplies.
