Google Fi MVNO waiting on Apple to enable RCS for iPhone

iOS 18 is rolling out immediately with RCS to enhance the Android-iPhone messaging expertise, however assist just isn’t but enabled for all carriers, together with Google Fi Wi-fi.

In an announcement, Google tells us that “solely Apple has the power to allow RCS interoperability for iPhone customers on Fi.” The Google MVNO has completed all the required work to assist iPhone RCS on its finish.

As of the iOS 18 launch immediately, RCS is enabled on the large US carriers (AT&T, T-Cell, and Verizon). One other MVNO we’re not seeing it out there on is Mint Cell.

Behind-the-scenes, our colleagues at 9to5Mac clarify how carriers need to ship an up to date file, which is called the Service Bundle, to Apple noting that RCS assist is enabled. The iPhone maker can then distribute that file as an over-the-air replace that doesn’t require an entire new model of the OS.

Replace: Apple has since added “RCS messaging” to the “Wi-fi service assist and options for iPhone” assist article.

“We have now been working for a very long time to speed up the adoption of RCS, and are excited that Apple is taking steps to undertake RCS with the launch of iOS 18. At launch, Fi customers with an Android cellphone will be capable of talk over RCS with iPhone customers which have RCS interoperability enabled. Solely Apple has the power to allow RCS interoperability for iPhone customers on Fi, and our hope is that they are going to achieve this within the close to future. ”

That stated, as of immediately, Google Fi subscribers on Android can “talk over RCS with iPhone customers which have RCS interoperability enabled.”
